Thomas MURPHY 1836-1919
& Mary Margaret GRIFFIN 1840-1913 Tomacork, Wicklow, Ireland; Tahara, Greenwald & Portland, S-W Victoria, Australia Thomas MURPHY b. 1836, Tomacork, Co Wicklow, Ireland, son of Patrick MURPHY and Mary CARROLL who had a number of children from 1823 to 1839, born at Croneyhorn and baptised at nearby Tomacork, Co Wicklow, Ireland. Thomas MURPHY arrived in Victoria about 1851 and was in Western Victoria for 68 years up to his death at his residence in Tyers-street, Portland where he died in 1919. Thomas MURPHY, a laborer, was married at Hamilton, S-W Victoria in 1864 to Mary Margaret GRIFFIN b. 1840 Co Clare, Ireland, daughter of Simon GRIFFIN and Mary LYONS. Thomas & Mary Margaret lived at Hamilton, Tahara, Greenwald and Portland where Mary died in 1913 and Thomas in 1919, and both are buried in the South Portland cemetery. Thomas MURPHY acquired a 320 acre block of land at Greenwald around 1876, which remained in the family for a number of generations. Thomas and Mary purchased a cottage in Portland in 1911.
