John HOLT b. 1835, Lewes, Sussex, England son of Rev. John HOLT, Baptist minister & Mary Ann CAVE, married Janet "Jessie" McDONALD at "Wando Vale" station, S-W Victoria in 1861.
Janet "Jessie" McDONALD b. 1844, Glagow, Scotland, daughter of Finlay McDONALD & Marion Sarah McKAY who arrived at Portland, S-W Victoria, Australia with her mother & step-father John McPHERSON on the "Arabian" in 1854. The family group arriving on the "Arabian" was John McPHERSON (27?), Marian McPHERSON (37) (formerly McDONALD, nee McKAY) with children from her first marriage to Finlay McDONALD, Margaret McDONALD (15), John McDONALD (10), Jessie McDONALD(8) & Norman McDONALD (6).
John HOLT was the first teacher at the Sandford Church of England denominational school which opened on 25th January 1861. He married Janet "Jessie" McDONALD, aged 17y, with her mother's consent, at "Wando Vale" station in February 1861. Their first daughter was born at Sandford in November 1861. By December 1862 the family had moved to Drop Drop, near Mount Gambier, South Australia and in 1863 John HOLT was the teacher at Compton school near Mount Gambier, SA.
John HOLT was a teacher at a variety of schools around South Australia before he went to teach at Palmerston, Darwin, Northern Territory from 1876-1879. He died there in 1879 leaving a widow and 8 children back at Moonta, Yorke Penninsular, South Australia.
Janet "Jessie" HOLT died in Adelaide, SA in 1895.
